Trayvon Martin's parents lead protests over Zimmerman verdict

By Edward Upright and Zachary Faginson

NEW YORK/MIAMI (Reuters) - Trayvon Martin's mother choked back tears as a crowd of 2,000 New Yorkers chanted "We love you" - one week after George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder by a Florida jury in the fatal shooting of the unarmed black teenager.

Across the nation, hundreds marched in the heat of a summer Saturday to rally at federal courthouses in Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities, demanding "Justice for Trayvon."

In Miami, Tracy Martin told about 300 supporters of his son's cause that, after the acquittal, he has "come to realize George Zimmerman wasn't on trial - Trayvon was on trial."

In New York, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z and singer Beyonce, his wife, arrived at one of the largest of the protests organizer Rev. Al Sharpton said were planned for 100 cities nationwide.

Martin's mother stifled sobs as she told the crowd: "Not only I vow to do what I have to do for Trayvon Martin, I promise I'm going to work hard for your children as well."

Among "Boycott Florida" signs were protesters wearing T-shirts with a photo image of Martin in a hooded sweatshirt.

"I've got four beautiful daughters. I want them to look forward rather than behind their backs," said Harlem resident Maria Lopez, 31, who attended the rally with her children.

Visible above the neckline of her Trayvon T-shirt was a tattoo of a packet of Skittles, the candy the teen was carrying when he was shot dead by the neighborhood watchman.

Civil rights leaders had voiced hopes for peaceful protests after outbreaks of violence that earlier this week led to arrests in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

Late last Saturday night, a Seminole County jury in central Florida acquitted George Zimmerman, who is part Hispanic, of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the incident, where 17-year-old Martin was shot through the heart.

About 500 people converged on the federal courthouse in Los Angeles under gray skies, toting signs saying ?Open Season on the Black Man' and ?This Should Not Be OK in 2013 America."

Protesters' chants - "No Justice, No peace" - echoed across the courthouse plaza in call-and-response form.

Another speaker shouted out: "Who was that cryin'?" and the crowd responded: "Trayvon Martin." That exchange was in reference to conflicting testimony about the high-pitched screams for help captured on the 911 call, that were identified by Martin's mother as being Trayvon's, and by Zimmerman's mother as her own son's.

Farther north in foggy downtown San Francisco, about 100 people stood in front of the Federal Building.

Reverend Arnold Townsend, 70, vice president of the local NAACP chapter, vowed to "bring to light this incident let black children know the system has them under attack."

At the White House on Friday, President Barack Obama cautioned against violence, as he urged all Americans to try to understand the Martin case from the perspective of African-Americans.

"There is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws," Obama said. "A lot of African-American boys are painted with a broad brush. If a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario ... both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different."

Zimmerman remained free for more than six weeks after the incident because Sanford, Florida, police accepted that he had acted in self-defense. That ignited protests and cries of injustice across the country, shining a spotlight on issues such as race, profiling and vigilantism.

'A WORLD WHERE RACISM EXISTS'

Sharpton has said he hopes continued public pressure will force the Justice Department to bring a civil rights case against Zimmerman.

Federal prosecutors have said they are investigating whether Zimmerman violated civil rights laws. But lawyers with civil rights expertise have said they think new charges are unlikely.

Public comments from one of the six jurors, citing Florida's Stand Your Ground law as a factor in reaching her conclusion that Zimmerman acted in self-defense, has stepped up pressure on the state's legislature to repeal or change the law.

The jury was told that Zimmerman had "no duty to retreat and right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if he reasonably believed it was necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself."

Although Stand Your Ground was not cited as part of the defense, the jury's instructions came from the 2005 statute.

Florida Governor Rick Scott told a sit-in outside his office in Tallahassee on Thursday that he supports the law and has no plans to convene a special legislative session to change it.

"We still live in a world where racism exists,'' said Rev. Reginald Edwards at the U.S. District Courthouse in Tallahassee, where nearly 80 protesters assembled at midday to urge federal officials to charge Zimmerman with civil rights violations.

Israeli Official Hints Pentagon Plans May Make Lone Strike On Iran Unnecessary

New York Times:

JERUSALEM ? Israel?s departing defense minister, Ehud Barak, said that the Pentagon had prepared sophisticated blueprints for a surgical operation to set back Iran?s nuclear program should the United States decide to attack ? a statement that was a possible indication that Israel might have shelved any plans for a unilateral strike, at least for now.

Italy awaits market reaction to Monti exit soon

FILE - In this Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 file photo, Italy's former premier Silvio Berlusconi, left, talks to Italian Premier Mario Monti at the lower chamber in Rome. Although Italy's Silvio Berlusconi resigned in disgrace a year ago, has been convicted of tax fraud and now faces plunging poll numbers, the media baron is showing he still has the power to put pressure on his successor, Premier Mario Monti. With Europe still deep in its debt crisis, it doesn't take much to make the markets nervous. That's what happened Thursday when the 76-year-old Berlusconi withdrew his party's support for Monti's government, threatening a premature end to its ambitious reform program. (AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia, File)

(AP) ? Italy and the rest of Europe on Sunday anxiously awaited the reaction of financial markets to Premier Mario Monti's surprise decision to resign and set the stage for an early vote, as speculation abounded over whether he might dive into politics and challenge Silvio Berlusconi in the election.

Monti has been widely credited with restoring faith in the country's capacity to survive the eurozone debt crisis since he took over the helm of a non-elected "technocrat" government. But he told the Italian president Saturday it was impossible to continue to lead after Berlusconi's party, Parliament's largest, dropped its support and blamed his austerity measure for Italy's staying mired in recession.

"We'll see what the markets will do," President Giorgio Napolitano told reporters asking if he was worried about the repercussions of the political crisis, including how it would affect its credibility and financial ratings.

It was Napolitano who appointed Monti, an internationally respected economist, last year to replace Berlusconi, the three-time premier whose resistance to potentially unpopular austerity measures panicked financial markets and helped set Italy tottering toward a Greece-style debt crisis.

Monti told Napolitano he would step down as soon as Parliament passes a budget bill, likely within two weeks, setting the stage for elections as soon as February.

Monti's accomplishments at the helm of the nonpartisan government included steering through Parliament tough pension reform, higher sales taxes and a revived property tax. He nonetheless enjoys high popularity ratings.

Supporters have encouraged Monti to run for the premiership. Speculation about whether he would face off with Berlusconi and others has been rife in the media, and Italians were lamenting his early departure.

A video and song quickly put together by popular Italian comedian and TV host, Rosario Fiorello, made the rounds of the Internet. The video shows Sunday's newspaper headlines about Monti's decision to quit and Berlusconi's bid to return to power.

"Let's do ourselves some harm, as only we know how to do" Fiorello sings in Italian as the camera pans the headlines. "We're Italians. We like to suffer."

Once he resigns, Monti will have a freer hand to jump into politics, since he no longer needs to guarantee the nonpartisanship that had until this week assured him broad backing in Parliament.

But, he he smiled and said nothing when reporters came up to him after he left a Milan church with his wife where the couple attended Mass.

"It's clear that he (Monti) feels free to decide. He's thinking about it, and many are pushing him to take a step" into politics, Corriere della Sera's editor, Ferruccio de Bortoli wrote.

He has been widely praised by economic analysts, central bankers and many European leaders.

"Mario Monti's government has achieved great things in a short period of time ? won back the confidence of investors, moved forward budget consolidation," Joerg Asmussen, a German member of the European Central Bank's executive board, was quoted as telling Germany's Bild daily.

A London-based analyst at UniCredit, Erik F. Nielsen, said in his weekly comments Sunday that he wasn't worried that Berlusconi was running again, but warned that "you should expect some short-term market reactions."

Nielsen, the Italian bank's global chief economist, said there would probably be a sell-off in Italian assets Monday morning, followed by some pressure into Thursday's bond auction. But "I am not seriously worried about the direction of policies in Italy ? and if Monti were to take a clear stand in the election, I suspect that the rally could be back on before long."

Defying opinion polls that indicate Berlusconi's party's popularity has taken a dive, to under 15 percent, the media baron announced on Saturday that he was running to regain the premiership, shortly before Monti's own decision to step down was revealed by Napolitano.

Possibly banking on appealing to his populist base, Berlusconi has vowed to again abolish the property tax on primary residences that Monti quickly reinstated as part of revenue-building measures for state and local coffers. The tax had been abolished by Berlusconi as part of a campaign promise during his successful 2008 run for office.

Central banker Asmussen added a warning: "Whoever governs Italy, a founding nation of the EU, after the elections will have to continue this course with the same earnestness" that Monti employed.

TWIF #6: Great New Things I Ate This Week: Schwartz, Acheson ...

Sounds like a legal firm right? This past week I ate some Great (and some New) food at Michael Schwartz?s two Miami restaurants: MGFD and Harry?s Pizzeria plus a great new dish at the great Nemesis Urban Bistro.

On Sunday I ate at Schwartz?s flagship restaurant, Michael?s Genuine Food & Drink . The duck confit was crispy, meaty and tender and came with a sweet jelly, lemony frisee and spicy pumpkin seeds that went really well together. The wood oven roasted swordfish and side of pesto cauliflower where also delicious. But the new thing I had never tried there, or cooked that way, was the short rib. It is slow roasted for hours and then grilled for a delicate char, which made for one of the most tender yet smokey pieces of beef I have ever tasted. It was very pleasant to enjoy this cut this way, since usually they are braised and the sauces can be over-powering. Here the short rib spoke for itself. Amazing.

On Wednesday I was lucky enough to attend the next installment of the Chef Pop-Ups Schwartz has been hosting at this second restaurant, Harry?s Pizzeria. This time the invited restaurant was Empire State South and its James Beard Award Winning Chef, Hugh Acheson. The menu included some great starters that were passed around including fried bologna on hawaiian roll, pimiento cheese sandwiches, beef tartare on benne cracker and roast fig / ricotta pizza with ESS 16 month ham. All really good. Upon sitting the menu started with a fabulous wood roasted rock shrimp, lardo mayo, pickled peppers, fermented carrot and peanuts?salad, followed by a red snapper crudo with red hot creme fraiche. The main course was a succulent cornish hen accompanied by sweet & sour eggplants and creamed corned Kimchi. For me, the new thing was the lamb heart, which was wood roasted and came on a bed of ?oatotto? (a very creamy risotto made with oats), roasted okra and chow chow. I am not an expert in Offal, nor do I have much experience eating it, so I jump to it whenever I get the chance. The heart slices definitely tasted like lamb, and were juicy tender. I tried many pieces on their own to gauge their individual flavor, and thought ?they could use a bit more seasoning (maybe heart shouldn?t be or can?t be seasoned?). But overall, glad to have tried a new food and together with the oatotto, the dish worked wonders. Kudos to Y?all Taste This for a much better pic than the one I took!

Finally I paid a visit to what is to my mind one of the best places in Miami for breadth of flavor, given the amazing creativity and skill of Chef Micah Edelstein: Nemesis Urban Bistro. As with most visits, I took some friends, this is my favorite place to take new people to, you always know they will be impressed and will eat something new, original, something they had never tasted before. Everything we had was delicious as always (Tuscan Sushi!!), but the new thing I had that blew me away was the new ?Octopussy? dish inspired by Micah?s recent holiday in Spain. ?The dish is made up of three perfectly cooked octopus tentacles ?and the most delicious ?tortilla espa?ola? squares you can imagine. Some drops of aioli a placed strategically throughout the dish and a peppery tomato based salsa rounds it up magnificently. Go tonight and order this!.

That?s it for this week, see you next week (if I get to eat anything new or anything Great)

Jews around world celebrate new year

Bernat Armangue / AP

Ultra-Orthodox Jews pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City, before the start the holiday of Rosh Hashana, early Sunday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Millions of Jews around the world began ushering in the new year, 5773, when the holiday Rosh Hashana began Sunday at sunset.

Rosh Hashana translates from Hebrew to mean "head of the year," said Karen Lewin, education and youth director at Beth El in Lower Makefield, Penn.

The book of life is opened for the coming year and the fate of each individual is decided by God, according to Jewish beliefs.

During Rosh Hashana, the faithful look back at their mistakes of the past year, make amends, so they can start the new year with a clean slate, Lewin said.

Ronen Zvulun / Reuters

People, seen through a doorway, shop at a food market in Jerusalem September 16, 2012, ahead of Rosh Hashanah on Sunday.

The names of the good are inscribed in the book to live another year. The wicked are redacted forever, and those in between are given a chance to reflect, repent and become righteous. After 10 days, on Yom Kippur, they can then be sealed into the book of life. Yom Kippur falls on Sept. 26.

President Barack Obama sent wishes for a "sweet year of health, happiness, and peace" in a video message:

"This is a joyful time for millions of people around the world. But Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are also opportunities for reflection. They represent a chance to take stock of our lives and look forward to the coming year with clear eyes and renewed purpose.

In that spirit, the Jewish Tradition teaches us that one of the most important duties we have during this period is the act of reconciliation. We?re called to seek each other out and make amends for those moments when we may not have lived up to our values as well as we should.

At a time when our public discourse can too often seem harsh; when society too often focuses on what divides us instead of what unites us; I hope that Americans of all faiths can take this opportunity to reach out to those who are less fortunate; to be tolerant of our neighbors; and to recognize ourselves in one another. And as a nation, let us be mindful of those who are suffering, and renew the unbreakable bond we share with our friends and allies ? including the State of Israel."

Israeli President Shimon Peres in a Rosh Hashana message called?Jews around the world?"full partners" with Israel.

"As we stand poised on the threshold of the New Year, it is my distinct pleasure to convey my heartfelt good wishes to all the Jewish communities around the world, in my name and on behalf of your brethren in Israel, eager to embark upon another year with hope and optimism," he said in his published message.

For some of the Jewish faithful, Rosh Hashana ends Monday, but for others on Tuesday at sundown, he said. Those days are spent at the synagogue, since working is not allowed throughout the holiday.

As with most religious holy days, symbols and customs are part of Rosh Hashana.

Apples and honey or honey cake are included in a meal to symbolize the wish for a sweet new year. Round challah bread symbolizes the year?s cycle, Lewin said.

Among other customs is sending family and friends greeting cards that read ?Shana Tova? or wishing ?A good year,? she said.

Also, the sound of a ram's horn, or shofar, is heard in Jewish homes and houses of worship to alert the Jewish faithful of the coming judgement.
