Justin Bieber Accepts Award At Tribeca Film Festival
Pop star and manager Scooter Braun were awarded the Disruptive Innovation Award for challenging industry's traditional gatekeepers.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and his manager Scooter Braun were at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (April 27) to accept the <a href="/news/articles/1682522/justin-bieber-one-direction-recording.jhtml">2012 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award</a> for disrupting "the traditional gatekeepers of the music industry." </P><P> </P><P>Sporting a varsity jacket when he took the stage, the 18-year-old noted that a lot of what he does is a reflection of his relationship with his fans. "I don't think that I would be here without the Internet. The fans feel connected to me," he said, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2012/04/justin-bieber-singer-teen-hearthrob-disruptive-innovator/" target="_blank">ABC News reports</a>. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~name%3Dnews%26id%3D1682760%26vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>According to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/27/justin-bieber-tribeca-disruptive-innovation-awards_n_1459518.html" target="_blank">The Huffington Post</a>, he recalled his early days of posting videos on YouTube under the moniker KidRauhl and how he was skittish of Braun, initially. </P><P> </P><P>"He called me, and my mom was like, 'Why am I going to trust a guy named Scooter?' " Bieber said. "So she ignored him, and he started calling all of the places where he saw me sing in my videos. ... It was some really creepy stuff. He finally found my great aunt, who I had never met before, to try and get in contact with me." </P><P> </P><P>Of those early days, Braun joked, "Either I was going to be the guy who watches videos of a young boy on the Internet and gets arrested, or I was going to sign him." </P><P> </P><P>The award seems fitting, given how much Bieber's rise to fame has changed the way talent can be discovered via the internet, and can use technology to spread the word. Some Iconia Tab A500s getting Ice Cream Sandwich early, Acer Ring is MIA
Last week, Acer announced that Ice Cream Sandwich would make its way to Iconia Tabs A100 and A500 in Canada and the US starting April 27th, but Phone Arena reports that some owners of the 10.1-inch A500 are getting the option to update a day ahead of schedule. If you're one of the lucky few to be in on the early upgrade, you should be ready to rock with Android 4.0.3 after a 30-minute install. The one potential downside to getting ICS ahead of time? You'll have to wait for the Acer Ring hub, which didn't make the cut for this update.

Walmart's website lets you Pay With Cash, strips away the 'convenience' of shopping online
Here's an idea: order products online, and then pay using regular 'ol dollar bills. Intrigued? That's exactly what Walmart has begun offering on its website today with its new Pay With Cash service. It's no different from initiating a normal web order, save for being another -- and potentially convoluted -- option to hand over your funds and checkout. After selecting PWC, you'll receive an order confirmation, which then allots you 48 hours to print it out and present it your local Wally World. From there, you can choose to pick up the item in store or have it shipped to your house -- in effect, stripping away some of the key conveniences of shopping online in the first place. Of course, one could likely just give their local store a call to place items on hold for a similar result, but hey, more options are always nice, right? At the very least, many without the likes of credit cards and Google Wallets might find some appreciation this method of retail purchasing. Hit up the links below for all the details.

Fujitsu Laboratories wants to take your mobile's 2D videos to another dimension
Fujitsu Laboratories has developed technology that will let any phone grab pictures and video with some of that third-dimension spice. Using a small attachment with cleverly positioned mirrors, the widget sits atop your phone's plain old 2D camera and breaks the incoming image into two. Once the data has been grabbed, you then send it off to Fujitsu's servers, whereupon it'll be converted into a 3D format. This isn't the first 2D-to-3D idea, but the main advantage, of course, is that your poor phone doesn't have to do all the leg-work -- but it undoubtedly comes at the expense of some quality. The gadget will get properly announced at the IEEE ISCE conference in Harrisburg on June the 4th along with pricing and availability. In the meantime you can step into the Japanese dimension -- i.e. the press release -- below for more info.

'Fringe' Renewed For Fifth And Final Season
Co-creator and executive producer J.J. Abrams promises fans a 'wild and thrilling' conclusion.

Despite the many rumors of cancellation, genre favorite TV series "Fringe" has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The series' dedicated fans should rejoice at the news of the 13-episode order, which the network announced Thursday (April 26).
"We are thrilled and beyond grateful that Fox — and our fans — have made the impossible possible: 'Fringe' will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way," co-creator and executive producer J.J. Abrams said in a statement. "All of us at Bad Robot are forever indebted to our viewers and the amazingly supportive Fox network for allowing the adventures of Fringe Division to not only continue, but to resolve in a way that perfectly fits the show."
" 'Fringe' is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television's most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve," Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company, said of the renewal. "The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world. Although the end is bittersweet, it's going to be a very exciting final chapter."
The news should be very welcome to the show's loyal fanbase, which was put on cancellation alert earlier this year when Reilly admitted to reporters that the show does not make the network any money.
Star Joshua Jackson told MTV News earlier this year that no matter how the show ends, he wants to please the fans who've stuck with the show and go out with a real ending, not a cliffhanger.
"The only thing that would piss me off about being canceled is if we brought people along for all these years — and they've been so dedicated and really stuck with the show — and we didn't finish it up," he said. "Whatever the future of the show is going to be ... the most important thing is that they have enough time to finish the story."
