Dreamworks Animation joins Walmart's disc to digital program

Image

DreamWorks Animation has signed up with Walmart's VUDU-powered disc to digital service. From today, you can take any of the studio's movies (such as Shrek or Kung-Fu Panda) and have them converted to standard quality video for $2 or a HD version for $5. There's no word on if DreamWorks proper would sign up, but given the complex nature of its ownership, we won't hold our breath.

One Direction, The Wanted And Boy-Band Explosion 3.0

Our columnist comes to terms with the latest wave of tween heartthrobs, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

No matter what my detractors (or therapist) might claim, I am not a 13-year-old girl. This probably explains why, up until this weekend, I remained largely unaware of the entire One Direction phenomenon — which is sort of indefensible, considering they made chart history with their #1 debut just last month, have spent quality time with Justin Bieber and display the kind of comb-over acumen that a slightly balding man like myself should probably be taking note of.

Though now, thanks to their (genuinely not totally terrible) performance on "Saturday Night Live," and a creeping sense of inevitability that only comes from living through the previous two boy-band eras (O-Town 4 Ever), I am willing to admit that it's probably time I get to know the guys in 1D. Their names are Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis, they were formed from the ashes of the U.K.'s "X Factor," and they are the logical successors to everything that has happened in the past five years of tween pop: a tight-trousered hybrid of the Disney factory's saccharine hooks, Bieber's hair, Miley's Ziplocked vocals, Cody Simpson's looks and the clean-cut camaraderie of the Jonas Brothers (or AllStar Weekend, who must really be jealous right now). In short, they were basically destined to happen. And happen big.

In fact, One Direction might end up being the biggest thing to happen in a long time. Either them or fellow band-of-heartthrobs the Wanted, who only seem to be different in that they are older, hornier — their biggest hit to date is called "Glad You Came" — and able to unbutton their shirts (though, it should be noted that 1D'er Harry could probably be an honorary member of the Wanted, since he ).

Perhaps both of them can coexist peacefully. After all, one need only look back to the last great era of boy bands — the late '90s and early 'aughts, when 'NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys battled for supremacy — to realize that the music industry truly is big enough for two titans of tween. If that's the case (and it probably is), well, then 1D are unquestionably this generation's 'NSYNC, and the Wanted the new BSB, since the former display a youthful exuberance and the latter, well, they're not afraid to (which was A.J.'s only notable contribution to the Boys).

All joking aside, though, I can't help wonder if we know what we're getting ourselves into here. I am aware that most 1D or the Wanted fans are probably too young to remember the last wave of boy-band mania, but suffice it to say, it was pretty terrible. Dudes had frosted tips and wore baggy neon pants. Aaron Carter got a recording contract. Are we really prepared to live in a world where boy bands are king? Are we ready for the dozens of coattail riders that will surely follow? Can we live with LFO version 2.0? The new Dream Street? 99 Degrees? All of this will happen, mark my words. Be prepared.

And yet, I am beginning to realize that perhaps my opinion does not matter. After all, I am a 33-year-old music critic. I like the Cloud Nothings record and was not aware until today that Harry sleeps naked and Louis likes girls who eat carrots. And these are important things to know! By now, I've been around long enough to realize that pop music is eternally cyclical, that boy bands were bound to rise again, and that, as always, youth is king. Perhaps I'd be best served to just step out of the way, watch as the same mistakes are made and marvel at the sheer spectacle of history repeating itself. It is as inevitable as One Direction's rise, really, if not more so. Enjoy it, kids, because I guarantee: Eventually you'll look back on all this and laugh. And if that sounds like the ranting of a bitter old man, well, so be it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do my hair like Liam. He's "the sensible one," after all.

What do you think of the latest wave of boy bands? Do you think there will be more to come? Let us know in the comments!

4 Ways To Engage Your Kids Without Technology | Pregnancy Blog

Posted on 09. Apr, 2012 by Danielle Buffardi in Family

Gadgets, they seem so normal, right? Technology has begun replacing family bonding time, dinner time, and even family activities.

It?doesn?t?seem strange anymore to be spending time with your family and you?ll check your phone three times in an hour (or more) to see what?s going on with your email, social sites, etc.

The days when families spent genuine, quality time together seem to be getting less and less.

If you?re one of the moms who wants to leave the technology at home and get back to some good old-fashioned bonding and spending time with your kiddies, then here are four ways you can do just that regardless of your kids? ages.

Go Outside

Seriously, leave your iPhone inside and go sniff the fresh air outside.

Look at the flowers, climb a small tree, play soccer, play Whiffle Ball, blow bubbles, go find some rocks to paint, or tell your kiddies to hide while you count to ten. You don?t have to join the YMCA or other pricey facility to be able to give your kids some no-technology time. Your backyard (or a park) is free and ready for you to frolic in.

The one-on-one interaction that you will be giving your kids is not only something they need to grow successfully, but it?s also something they crave from their parents.

Don?t forget that it?s essentially how you grew up. When you were a kid, there were no laptops and iPads to hold your attention. You had to go outside and get on your bike or dig for worms to entertain yourself. And it was wonderful now that you think about it, right?

The same goes for your children now, they appreciate and need that outside fun time. But even more so, they adore when they have your undivided attention on an activity that you both can do together.

Become One With Your Inner Artist

Whether you can draw or not is irrelevant. What?s important is that you use your creativity to give birth to something uniquely yours.

You can choose to have fun modeling clay, painting an empty canvas, even simply drawing and coloring with some crayons is totally acceptable.

If you think your kids will enjoy it, you can also find some local art spots to paint some pottery, take art and sculpting lessons, even learn how to draw!

Or if you?d prefer to keep it nearly free, hunt online or at the library for kid craft project ideas, patterns, coloring pages, and other art-related activities. Chances are, you?ll have some materials lying around the house that can be used to create something wonderful.

Help Those Less Fortunate

Volunteering is a fantastic activity to do with your children. Not only will you be helping those in need, but your kids will get to experience first-hand how compassion and giving have the power to change and touch peoples? lives.

Do You Know The Muffin Man?

Get your cook on, mama!

Cooking and/or baking is a wonderful way to connect with your kids using zero technology.

Try new recipes, come up with your own, bake for your neighbor, cook for your friends, even bring dishes to Grammy?s house.

Cooking and baking has always been a relatively inexpensive activity to pursue with your family. Go on the hunt for old cookbooks or head over to the library to borrow some books to find new ideas.

You?ll be amazed at the designs and direction that your kiddies take their food in, give it a try.

GCHQ warns it is losing terrorists on the internet - All VoIP News

GCHQ, the Government's listening post, have grown increasingly concerned that modern internet research has left them unable to intercept calls which use new innovation instead of traditional phone systems.

They include computer to computer calling systems like Skype, nevertheless also many of the discount phone deals offered to make calls abroad from landlines.

Senior intelligence sources with detail knowledge of the problem said GCHQ had seen their access to telephone intercept information "eroded" by the use of the internet telephone services.

Highly placed source said

A highly placed source said: "We need to take action to maintain the continued availability of communications data to the police and other agencies investigating criminality and it is true that the ability of these agencies to get access is eroding due to changes in communications research and usage."

Plans for the controversial move to make internet and phone companies keep a record of every email, phone call, text message and message on social networks just as Facebook, were first disclosed by The Sunday Telegraph in February.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed to a statement given to the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee by Sir David Pepper, the next head of GCHQ, four years ago, in which he warned of the problems it was facing due to the growth of this innovation, and which was not widely published at that time.

He said: "One of the greatest challenges for GCHQ is to maintain its intercept capability in the face of rapidly evolving communications innovation. This relates in particular to the growth in internet-based communications and voice over internet telephony.

"The internet uses a very different approach to communications. To put it more exactly than having any sense of fixed lines... communications are broken up... whether you are sending an email or any other form of internet communication... packets are at that time routed around the network and may go in any one of a number of different routes... the biggest change in telecoms research since the invention of the telephone. It is a complete revolution..."

The rest of Sir John's testimony on the subject

The rest of Sir John's testimony on the subject was blacked out on national security grounds as were the words of MI5 director general Jonathan Evans, who is believed to have confirmed that the innovation was causing the Security Service real difficulties.

It is understood that in the last few years GCHQ has been working on ways to get around the problems caused by this use of the internet however its success or failure is highly classified.

However it was hoped that the new legislation being mooted by the Coalition Government would have helped the intelligence services by allowing so-called Deep Packet Inspection equipment to be installed on the UK network.

Intelligence picture of terrorists

Until now intercepted telephone conversations have proved crucial in building up an intelligence picture of terrorists and criminals' operations. Calls can only be intercepted with a warrant from the Home Secretary, and special equipment at GCHQ is used.

Land line phone conversations are relatively easy to intercept, using equipment installed at telephone exchanges and satellite ground stations, nevertheless internet calls are virtually impossible to listen in on unless a bug is installed on the computer being used to send or receive it.

Increasingly it is not just Skype and similar calls between computers which are routed over the internet, nevertheless also calls from landlines, often those made through alternative call providers which offer cheap deals for long-distance and international calls.

Once the information contained in a conversation is sent over the internet it is broken up into tiny pieces, or packets, and sent using myriad different routes and is only reassembled at the other end by the computer receiving the "call".

In the United States research has already been adopted which can intercept internet phonecalls. The National Security Agency with cooperation from telecoms giant AT&T, is using "Deep Packet Inspection innovation" for internet traffic surveillance. It is used to find which packets are carrying e-mail or an internet telephone call. A similar system is as well in use by the US Department of Defense.

But this form of internet sifting is highly controversial and is as well used in countries including China and Iran to censor certain internet activity.

Last night Gus Hosein, of Privacy International, said: "We don't want deep packet inspection 'black boxes' to be installed because it opens the door to all kinds of intrusion into private communications.

"The Government are kidding themselves if they think as before long as they have the black boxes they'll be able to check everyone's VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls, in short on, because everything is encrypted.
